My budget, with disks, is about USD $2000, and I'm eyeing 4 HGST 6TB's to start out with, adding more as I go. The Synology only lasted 2.5 years, which to me is nowhere near long enough. Is the Qnap any better? I'm moving towards the TVS-671, but I have a nagging feeling about the TS-663 or 653 series, especially when it comes to power consumption and heat generation, so much so that it's paralyzing me from buying. I can't, for example, load a 1000 song playlist onto my phone, and the app has a tendency to play over bluetooth without showing a GUI. ![]() Streaming audio outside the house: As I said earlier, the Syno mobile audio application really **. My biggest thing with this is I don't know what I don't know about the voodoo of transcoding, and need a little help on which device would be better suited for this. I was considering dropping as an interface a Roku or Raspberry Pi (either with Kodi front ends), so my understanding is that I would need a healthy transcoding engine to push video to those types of devices, and that I'm mainly bandwidth constrained by pushing media to any devices outside the house. #Plex media server synology ds413 fullCurrently, I have a full Windows PC running Kodi in the living room that I know does just fine on its own, however when I start adding TV's I don't want to have to build a PC for each one, no matter how cheap the NUC's can get. Basically any of the core Synology apps for the DS413 have a mobile app available allowing users to access different types of functionality. Synology have worked hard to develop a suite of apps for iPhone, iPad and Android devices. That said, I would like the new device to do these things: - Ability to run a Windows VM to host home server software, I need someplace to park any centrally accessed software (Kodi/PVR backend, network tuner software) without spinning up a brand new box - Plex Media Server support with transcoding (I have a healthy percentage of my media library 1080p, median file size is roughly 15GB if that helps with bitrate calculations). Not only that, but you can also setup the DS413 as a web server and put your own 3rd party website on it. #Plex media server synology ds413 updateIf you want to update your DSM to this version now, please click here. For it's capabilities, it's chugged along moderately well until I figured out about 6 months in that Plex doesn't support ARM processors, and that the transcoding necessary to play my media on mobile devices in or out of the house wasn't going to happen. Release Notes for DS413 DSM 6.2 Series DSM 5.2 Series All versions Version: 6.2.4-25556 Update 6 () Important Note The update is expected to be available in all regions shortly, while the time of release in each region vary slightly. It has the following apps running: Download Station Audio Station (which I would use more of if the Syno mobile app wasn't so terrible, more on that later) Sickbeard SABnzbd RADIUS Server Syslog Server Cloud Sync (sync to Google Drive) Cloud Station (sync to mobile phone app) DLNA Media Server (not really being utilized) Antivirus Client count is low, if we turn everything on at once I'm budgeting for 3 TV's, 1 iPad, 1iPhone, and 1 Android device. From an application standpoint, it runs my house. Currently, i have a Synology DS413j ARM based NAS which is almost at capacity. #Plex media server synology ds413 installTo install and configure your very own Plex Media Server on a Synology NAS, you'll need the following equipment.I've been looking around the Presales forum for some insight on this, but I can't find anyone who mirrors my setup so I thought I'd do my own thread before I plop down some cash. #Plex media server synology ds413 how toIf you'd like to learn more about Plex, check out our guide on how to get started with Plex. #Plex media server synology ds413 windows 10Now you can enjoy access to all your content on your smart TV, Xbox One, tablet, smartphone, Windows 10 PC, laptop, and all other devices running the Plex app with adequate access.
